What to do BEFORE a Hurricane:

INSURANCE POLICY

Obtain your policy and keep it with you.

INSURANCE CHECKUP

Do an insurance checkup.  Check your deductible. 10%, 5%, 3%, 2%.  Find out your limits. We are happy to review your policy for you – free consultation with no charge.

PICTURES OF OUTSIDE OF HOME

Take and save pictures of the outside of your house – walls, windows, yard, trees, pools, lanai, soffits and roof.

PICTURES OF INSIDE OF HOME

Take and save pictures of the inside of your home – ceilings, walls, windows, floors, cabinets

PICTURES OF CONTENTS

Take pictures of your contents – expensive and valuable furnishings, TV’s, electronics, furniture, safes, and other valuables. Make a list of it and each item’s value and when you purchased it.  Save receipts if you can.

SECURE VALUABLE DOCUMENTS

Secure valuable documents, Social Security Cards, ID’s, deeds, contracts, passports, prescriptions, wills, or other important documents.

PROPERTY

Protect your property.

ROOF INSPECTION

Get a roof inspection. Often includes pictures, satellite photos and estimates and is free.

WINDOWS

Board up windows.

PROTECT ITEMS IN THE HOME

Store important items high or in centrally located rooms/closets.

NEWS ALERTS

Pay attention to news alerts on the strength and path of the storm.

SANDBAGS

Sandbags if you flood.

PROTECT WINDOWS

Board and tape windows.

TREES

Trim branches that may fall on your home.

GAS AND WATER

Turn off gas and water.

SECURE ITEMS OUTSIDE

Secure items outside that may be blown by high winds.

EVACUATE

LEAVE if you are told to. Life is more important than property.

What to do AFTER a Hurricane:

SAFETY

FOCUS ON SAFETY.

REPORT YOUR CLAIM

Immediately call in the claim when you discover any damage. Do not wait.  Policies often require prompt notice. 

PROTECT FROM FURTHER DAMAGE

Protect your property from further damage –board up broken windows, tarp roofs, walls and windows that leak. Take care of your contents.

KEEP AC ON

Keep your AC on to prevent or stop mold growth

DOCUMENT DAMAGE

Document the damage. Take pictures and videos and date all damage.

DAMAGE LIST

Make a list of all the damage.

KEEP RECEIPTS

Keep receipts for the damage and anything you spend repairing damage.

COOPERATE WITH INSURANCE PROVIDER

Cooperate with the insurance company’s requests for documents and inspections. Call us with any questions you have.  If the carrier asks to take your recorded statement or examination under oath, feel free to call us to consult.

CONTRACTS - BE CAREFUL

Be careful signing contracts with repair companies, adjusters or lawyers. There are some bad actors out there.
